About a year ago I needed to employ a junior graphic designer. One thing I insisted upon was that they know their way around Photoshop. I put in the ad; “
Must be very competent in Photoshop”.
The range of Photoshop competency I received was heartbreaking. I got so-called ‘designers’ who
only worked in
Photoshop – including page layout, logo design and web page creation!, right through to degree-bearing designers who could put
Layer Styles on text, but that’s about the limit of their skills. The one thing all candidates had in common was that they believed they were ‘very competent’ in
Photoshop.
So like I’ve done numerous times in the past when faced with a perplexing situation, I wrote a book.
Entitled “
25 Essential Photoshop Moves”, this book lays out 25 skills, tools and… well,
moves that a ‘competent’
Photoshop user should know. In other words, this is the knowledge and these are the skills that I
expected all of my job applicants to possess.
I sold the book for a while, but then decided to do something really, really stupid; give it away. And I’m still doing it. If you want a copy of this 175 page book, you can get it here;

Download it, read it, and then comment on it. (I have a thick skin!) You will also be signed up to my newsletter, but don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt. You’ll be notified of new books and new tutorials I produce, and kept reasonably well informed of industry news and tips.
Of course if you want to pay for the book that’s fine. You can get a printed version sent to you from here;

Good luck with the book, and I look forward to your comments.
