Also check out some advert sites too - I know ebay's gumtree has both job ads but also requests for freelance work.
There are also websites where you can sign up as a freelance and then bid on the jobs added to the site.
There is also some great info in this thread (and those connected to it). Flashwiz should have his title changed to 'Freelance God'.
I also think the argument toon heard brings up the point about working for a company and working for yourself. I don't think it can be said you not a designer if you don't work for yourself. In many ways if you can survive freelance, you've either got a fresh style thats got clients lapping it up or you're churning out the same stuff as everyone else. On the flip side if you can't, its either because your style is too experiement or different to appeal, your marketing/targeting/reaching clients wrongly, or your churning out the same stuff and you've been caught for it.
