If you have a look at some of the current sweet site's they do look very traditional.

www.treasureislandsweets.co.uk
www.sweetsncandy.co.uk
www.bagofsweets.com
www.aquarterof.co.uk

Chances are you want clean crisp easy on the eyes site like the current css sites I try to showcase like some of these..

http://reachgroupconsulting.com/
http://www.coolinarika.com/
http://www.oneida.com/
http://www.jaredigital.com/
http://www.corkd.com/

Any of these draw you in in the way you would want??

Ignore their product base and colours but the clean layout and inviting cleanliness of the site.

Thanks for those super links Toon (you are very kind indeed to spend so much time helping the people on this forum).

These sites are exactly the kinds of sites I would like to emulate.

As for the actual layout of the site, if you can think of it more of a pen pal connection site with a candy theme rather than a sweet shop site this may give a clearer idea of what I am looking to do.

One thing worries me a little. I am ok using Photshop, I am okay at HTML and okay at using dreamweaver but CSS are something I have never created before. I am worried that the time I spend learning CSS to a good enough level to provide a rich site for visitors may prevent me from getting the site running.

What do you think? I know nothing about CSS really so maybe I should learn but I am busy getting material for the site together at the moment I'm not sure when I would find the time. That said, if it is a skill i NEED then I guess I will have to do it.

Anyone's thoughts on this?

Cheers

CSS is really just a layout skill and it only gets difficult depending on how far you're willing to take it. See http://www.csszengarden.com/ to see how simple style sheet changes can change the look and feel on a site. If it's a buddy site sort of site it's most probably the working parts of the site the programming that will be the real head ache. I can design but I'm not a programmer and that I know that is often the tough bit, the working elements and user interactivity. Maybe flashwiz might be able to give you a few ideas he has a great mix of design and coding skills. I'm quite happy to give ideas on the layout though.

That link didn't work but I think I have been to that site before.

This question should really go elsewhere I suspect but while I am here. Why use CSS when I use nested tables and a little imagination to create ok sites?

What will I gain from learningt o use CSS?

Thanks for walking me through this, I am a total CSS virgin so you may have to :hammer: the info into me.

Thanks

Can of worms here...but an interesting question...

Tables are slow
Tables can be inflexible
Accessibility issues are easier with CSS
Tables don’t degrade
Tables don’t print as well
Examples
Followups
Other Resources

Have a quick read here..

http://davespicks.com/essays/notables.html

If you haven't got time the fact is tables were never meant for layout purposes but only really to hold tabular data, it's a bit of short cut, harder to update and eventually could hinder a site alot in the future.

Quote:
Tables existed in HTML for one reason: To display tabular data. But then border="0" made it possible for designers to have a grid upon which to lay out images and text. Still the most dominant means of designing visually rich Web sites, the use of tables is now actually interfering with building a better, more accessible, flexible, and functional Web. Find out where the problems stem from, and learn solutions to create transitional or completely table-less layout.

Here's a quick mock up I did, (excuse the cheesy stock and anim, didn't want to spend too long).
