In the first 15 contests I won 4 (3 recorded wins).. Now I'm at a dry spell. The sad thing is that on a logo contest, it was down to mine and another logo. The other logo won but the client asked the winning artist to incorporate changes in theirs to emulate my logo. And the reason I know this is because the client told me himself after I won a contest from the same client. It didn't thrill me to find out, but at least they were honest.

Surely the client should've asked you to alter your logo entry slightly if he had the other entrant simply emulate yours?

That's the kind of thing that ****es me off about 99designs.

I entered a brochure design for a photographer, and had my entries eliminated right at the death (was between mine and about four others) - then got a comment from the CH saying "I really like your designs, keep them on file for my next project"

The annoying thing was, it was a brochure aimed at generating business for him by being sent to ad/creative agencies, and the entries that were left had covers that were photoshopped to death.

I work for a design agency and if anything like that comes in for a photographer, the immediate thought is "Why all the photoshop? Aren't the photos good enough by themselves?" and the brochure goes straight in the bin.

But, it's his choice at the end of the day...

Going to throw in some logo designs over the weekend I think, there's a couple I'm looking at where the entries are photoshoppy monstrosities, completely unusable as logos, so I should be in with a shout of winning those.

Original... I totally agree about the client should have asked first. I didn't argue since the client may bring me more work, and normally I would say something but I got paid pretty well for the other design work I did for them. Sometimes you have to pick your battles.

And I very much agree about the photographer brochure. I entered another contest on 99 and it was an ad with photography in mind (think Vogue magazine). Another designer told me they thought my was sure to win and it didn't. The ads that the photographer seemed to like were the ones where the designer did all kinds of work to the photographer's photo. I don't get it either. Oh well.

Which logo contest will you be in? I don't enter those so I'll check your work out and comment for you.

Haven't quite decided which to enter yet, there's about five on my watch list so I'll be going through the briefs this morning (and the feedback on existing entries) to see which ones I fancy (and more importantly, the ones where the contest holder doesn't want a crappy photoshop effects laden "logo").

I know that not everyone on there is a professional, but even so it should be easy enough for them to read a brief... The amount of work I've seen that completely disregards the brief is unbelievable.

For example, one that I'm watching is for a company called Key Financial, and in the brief it specifically says "don't use a key, it's too obvious" - so what did all the first few entries include..?

    Yep, a key.

Since the brochure contest I entered I've looked at a couple of others posted for photographers, and they all seem to go with the photoshopped to death options - but at least I know that now.

Once I throw some entries up I'll post on here... For the moment, these were my entries for the brochure comp...

    Outer Cover Viz 01
    Outer Cover Viz 02
    Outer Cover Viz 03
    Outer Cover Viz 04
    Outer Cover Viz 05
    Outer Cover Viz 06
    Outer Cover Viz 07
    Outer Cover Viz 08
    Inside Spread Viz 01
    Inside Spread Viz 02

And the cover that won (without any consideration for how the cover design would translate to the rest of the brochure)...

    Photoshopped Crap

It's amazing to me... No consideration for layout, or type (it looks like he/she's using Arial for the cover typeface, no styling, no proper kerning, tracking or leading for that matter...), the photos are just thrown onto the page, there's no choice of focus on specific elements of the photography, the list goes on...

Copying is rampant, 99 didn't respond to any allegations of mine at all except for the canned auto responder.

I don't mind doing contest at CrowdSpring. I had entered a contest, received 5 star and praise.

The next day I noticed two designers had blatantly copied my concept.

I politely ;) contacted the designers first.

One said sorry and removed the design. The other basically told me to go "*&%( myself.

I reported it to CS and by days end the entry had been removed. "They take an active role"

They also hold the money in escrow, so if you fulfill your end off the contest, you'll get your money.

As for 99, I don't care for it. I do know of a lot who do well over there. Too much crap for me.

The Contest Holders are a story by themselves!

My best line from one was this:
"OMG, that is exactly perfect!! Can you make it more better?"

I dumbed it down and web 2.0ed it and won the contest. lol, go figure.

i hate 99designer and their designer as they have got cheap amateur designer who have photoshop and illustrator or what ever. They need to select quality designers if they are having a contest. Its just got a bunch of lame ones in there. Crazy designs that are reeal piece of shit, sorry for being rude but its really bad would win the contest. So its just a waste of time for talented ones like me.

anyway, there is always a chance to get your unique design and graphics to be stolen while competing in a public competitions, so we need to be careful as well.
