see already thats improving. i think you need something with the e and r - maybe some in illustrator flowing the letters into each other and then into the lollypop.

I mean it still feels like the text was just typed in and the other elements were slapped on

well firstly plan it out on paper - design it that way - where the stroke weight will vary how it will flow, the you have a guide to work with in illy.
