You get customers by advertising in local areas and building up your portfolio on your decent site! Also try asking friends if they want a website... And you could always ask local businesses!

Uhm ----- it's called free sites!!! I see this so often - people are wanting to have their own design business - which is great. But you need to understand what you are selling before you try to get real paying clients. So offer your skills for free - this will allow you to learn more and at the same time build a portfolio. I say first off - take a site that you really like and try to recreate it using your own images. I am not saying to use this idea when creating real sites for paying clients but it will help you learn.

The best way to get some work is to design some concept websites for fictious companies. although these are just concepts and not for real clients, it shows what skills you have and what you can do. Potential cleints will still regard this as real work and will build up your portfolio of work. People always want to see what you can do to get an idea of what they would like you to do for them. You don't have to mention these are concepts because its about the work and not that they are not real jobs. i hope this helps.
