Default Testing Server?

I'm trying to preview something that is written in PHP. I get a message saying that I need a testing server to preview pages containing server side code. What would a testing server be?

Tried the apache friends - xampp thing. My computer started going crazy. Not sure what happened there.

Rossable, is this what I need? Once I download this I should be good?

First, install your selected HTTP (web) server on your system, and make sure that it works.
that means either Apache or IIS in most cases.

Just install wamp (as long as you're not on XP64 or Vista64). It's better than xampp imo.
It includes apache, php and mysql in a single, simple installation with a nice little management application for them.
