Does anybody else find these menus strange on the left hand side

You roll over to expand but then have to scroll down a fair way to expand the next, whereas a click to collapse would be much better

Yeah I agree. Not not blow my own trumpet but the method I employ is easier to use.

i'm not a fan of expanding/collapsing navigations or the flyout menu styles either. too bad there's not much else you can do for large sites.

as shown by the "recent stories" menu on the left of the page it works well ONLY if all of the content is kept visible!!
