I would use the PHP date() function. It's simple and you can format it to display the date how you want.

Just use textpattern. It'd suit this perfectly but doesn't give you much else to work with without major modification.

Yeah should be quite simple. Textpattern uses it's own 'special' tags so as soon as you work out how they work everything is pretty easy. Check TextPattern.com for some more information. It's a very simple set up so shouldn't take long. If you get stuck let me know and I'll take a look.

For my clients I use CMS Made Simple. This is a very easy to setup CMS with template driven. I used it for my client's site: Gujarati Samaj of Minnesota | Home. It has some things similar to your needs:

See the "Samaj Samachar" (which translates for Organization News)? It is a news posting module built into CMSms. There is also a News Page which has all the articles. On this site, the two more recent news postings are outputed to each page with a brief summary and date as you can see. The news module is built into CMSms and you can easily add new news via the admin area.

CMSms is very easy to update to - my clients really like it. And it is easy from a developers standpoint since it uses Smarty tags and templates. For example, you can create a Smarty tag for your news module and put it in any page to show the news snippets, just like an RSS feed on your site (The news also has a built in RSS feed maker for your news!!).

Best way is just write your own.

I in no way shape or form see myself as "knowing php", But i made my own just from a little research & reading.

All the "simple" cms's kept wanting me to design around what they ouput, it felt like.
