Default Web Designer/Developer?

I'm currently in the process of becoming a web designer myself, but also we have gone into a few thing involving web development. im just wondering if there is much difference between the two. i raise this question because i was browsing this site..

Designer vs. Developer

the industry appears to be prodominately male, is this the case also?

In my opinion, although there are lots of people out there that can quite arguably do both, some very well, there is still alot of difference between a designer and developer.... and you would notice this on the standard of work that was produced from each one.

Part of the reason there is confusion is that companies are trying more and more to get 1 person to replace 2, which in some cases can work, but you will always get lesser quality work than if you had a Designer and a Developer.

Typically, a designer concerns themselves with the look of the site. Many still write code.

Developers concern themselves with code, not as much look but they still can produce a good looking site.

The important part is they spend just enough time worrying about the distinction between a designer and a developer that they neglect to do user testing.

Developers cost more money.
Good Designers are harder to come by.

There are quite many differences between designers and developers. A designer can't do everything a developer can do..maybe viceversa it works.
A designer only creates and thinks the design for a site, while a developer codes it.
