I think some people are nice, friendly, tolerant, etc and some aren't. Regardless of profession. Some more traditional designers and illustrators tend to be a bit more artsy and a pain in the **** whereas the hardcore programmer types are all a bit stressed, having not seen daylight since they discovered the latest greatest programming language.
I tend to find that all design/ web dev forums are clicky and are both intimidating and difficult to get into. Pete. :)

MAybe designers have more freedom and web devs have to stick to ever changing rules and regs
