Point of a freelancers site

What tactics are best practices to get sites linking to yours.. like you have a forum, so thats easy to get linkbacks to. But what about like a regular web designer getting flow black.

How would you approach that?

You post in forums with your sig having your webiste, You ll generate some decent traffic that way.

But seriously if your a "freelancer" your probably getting most of your work via word of mouth. So a freelance site should just be to showcase your work, If you think as a freelancer with a website, and your gonna sit back and wait for the call / emails / leads to come rolling in.. your gonna be very disapointed.

thing is - a site can serve more purpose than just searchs and traffic - it can be used to point potential people towards or clients. Now this could similarly be performed in many other ways. a promo flyer, mail out etc but a website can multi task in this way

I agree that a designers site serves more purpose than to get traffic. It is more so an electronic biz card, a digital portfolio,etc...

The people who need to see my site do so because I tell them how to get there.

If I was really worried about SEO I would just sign up for an AdWords with Charlotte + graphic design.

But, to each thier own I guess.

I agree with that, that is what mine is a portfolio, if i want people to see it i say thats the url - i have no interest in optimisation on search engines

A client may want to appear quite high in a search engine if you can't get your own site there how are you going to get theirs?
