Personally there should be two elements to a personal portfolio. and those are them.
ie, A:a portfolio - a manageable, logical selection of your work that can be looked at. this can be dated, sectioned, typed etc. I mean I've sorted my work into sections based on when and where it was done, because its often so different from soemthign else, havign to fit into corporate styles or some such.

B:Personal - make it your own, you own space and playground - as long as its not conflicting with the portfolio bit ( which can awful colours, graphics and design, as much as just layout) -

thats what mine was based on but its evolving as I do

This is an interesting thread. First off -

Flash Wiz- I completely agree with you. I work for a firm where my boss is bent on using tables because they work easier (for her) in Frontpage (please don't get me started on FP), but it is amazing how many clients love some of our older work.

For instance - there is a race here in Alaska known as the irondog - it goes for 1000 miles up to Nome. We did their first website and the design is nice but the development sucks. It has a lot of in depth stuff like GPS tracking and what not - but I did this site before I even knew about how far CSS could take me. But us having this site on our portfolio site has acquired us multiple new clients.

Sazzelli - I hear you man, the painters house gets painted last. I am currently working 2 jobs, go to school full time and I have a brand new baby girl. So what you need to do is what I did, take a day off from work and commit yourself to at least laying down the foundation. I was able to get mine done and I am updating content slowly but surely. http://www.gkwinspired.com

So, all I have to say is keep plugging away - but make it yours!!!!

If your focus isn't the web, theres no harm in having someone build the site for you to showcase your work.
