Lets say you think of he top 10 internet blogs on graphic design/web design/seo etc... Im puzzled. The blogs are great! full of wonderful tuts, resources and advice BUT when you look at the contributors/authors portfolio website, their work is often really average... For people that seem to be fountains of knowledge, why aren;t they the design leaders of the contemporary industry?

YES!!!

We've mentioned this before. They preach to people about design all yet their own portfolios are full of c*ap that looks like they did at college!

Freelance design/blogger are generally just unemployed people who like to go down the pub and tell everyone they're a designer!

Cut and paste bloggers mate!

They make lists that somebody else has already done, telling you something you already know. It's why I don't blog, I'm not that interesting and way too busy actually doing work

^To be honest their blogs aren't the issue, if a blog's shit - its shite, but when a blog is genuinely quality - why isn'tthe work of the same standard...

David Airey already has a great logo design blog and he puts a lot of time and effort into his posts. If you're going to start a blog in this day and age make sure it's got an angle that hasn't already been done, otherwise you'd just be covering mostly the same stories.

True, but am sure you don't approach logo design the exact same way that he does? That's the thing with a lot of tutorials and blogs that I find, the topic may be the same but the approach and methods used are quite often different or interpreted in a different way by different people. That's what makes them different and interesting, to me anyway.

Should Freelancers Be Blogging?

I'm not big on blogging, but I have thought about adding a blog to my site just to show customers that I can do it. I wish I was way too busy to be on this site talking about design and critiquing websites, but right now the economy is so bad that I have to keep my knowledge of what I know going and up to date while I wait on work to come.

I blog about things that interest me, my experiences and add titbits of information that I know that are off the beaten track, I don't much post about design at all, although it is fun highlighting a post with something I've bodged together.
