I'll take your word for it, being a bit crap at the whole code thing... anyone want to verify harry's claim. Someone is going to be someone's css bitch..

The spans in the list items just need making a little bigger to accommodate a larger sliced image...

In simple terms, what do the negative values do...

Checkout this example. From the old A List Apart CSS Sprites article.

It's reversed from the initial example, but essentially the same effect.

Sorry, harry, but again your code falls short. Moving your mouse off the hit area doesn't cause it to revert back to the original state.
That's the whole reason for the extra divs covering parts of the navigation. It's to unhover to link.
The only thing that could improve on my code is if you can think up a way to not need those extra divs to achieve the right effect. I don't think it can be done, and so far all you've come up with are incomplete versions of what i've made.

Look at the suisse website again a bit more closely. The aim is to replicate the menu EXACTLY as it is. My attempt does it perfectly in FF and IE7, just not in IE6 because the hover pseudoclass doesn't really work in IE6.

i agree, this can be done in CSS using lists with image replacement hovers, but i don't think that CSS is the way to go in this case.
Nothing special, my favorite menu is still at mootools - home
