Default what do you look for in a CMS?

I'm working on a CMS at the minute and i wondered what features you look for in a content management system - do you just want it to do the obvious like adding content to pages etc? what extra features would you want for it to have?

thanks a lot
James

I think there should be set CMS's for what you need. I like

CMS Made Simple - Welcome to CMS Made Simple

For simple CMS sites it doesn't get too complicated for your needs. But...

ExpressionEngine - Publish Your Universe!

Is an outstanding tool, but when you point a designer towards it their first thought is that it costs, but it costs for a reason because it's got so many powerful uses that you're only really limited by your imagination.

I think we're seeing a rise in very simple CMS's which is a good think as Joomla and Drupal have grown at such a rate that people want to be able to use the most simplest of back end solutions for their designs.

those are a pair of great examples, so far mine is slightly more towards the expression engine end of things, particularly in terms of appearance!

One thing i havent included yet is a preview options, which i didn't even think of!

my name thinking behind my cms is that it should be easy to use, because all the ones i've tried have confused the hell out of me!

Default I have been using

I have been using both Joomla and Drupal. I'm rather a newbie at web design, but I found them both very easy to use.

Joomla has been my favourite, because of the administrator backend that I can pass on to my clients. They love it because they can easily change the content of their site. It's very user friendly.

I also like the fact that both these CMS's are very customizable, and you can really do anyhing you like, any way you like (If you can program a little here and there).

I've made a little page to showcase my CMS as i develop it - AestheticList CMS | Content Management System if you'd like to have a look, although the site itself is about as undeveloped as the CMS!

You know the usual Web 7.0 stuff....

Planogramming

A/B Split Run Testing module allowing for multivariate testing

Heat map

Fund a feature and other prediction market tools

Perhaps an Information Arbitrage module with auction feed, of course

Why do you ask?

And yet another is Texty

Bluo is yet another simple web content poster applet.

The "hello world" of content management is to knock out one of these online versions of Notpad out. FYI they don't qualify as content management -- it's a layout management applet.
