Hi Everyone. I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my career and I’m hoping this would be the right forum to share my story. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry it is so long but once I started writing, I couldn’t stop. It has been kind of therapeutic . I studied at one of the major Art and Design Schools in NYC about 13 years ago. Since my design style has always been a simple, less is more kind of approach, during my last year at school, my adviser suggested that I do an internship at one of the major financial institutions here in the city. I was a bit apprehensive at first but I eventually followed her advice and took the 3-month internship. I ended up staying there for 6 years. I learned a tremendous amount and I was very happy. But I eventually decided to move on and had a great opportunity to spend a year working overseas in publishing design. It was a great experience but unfortunately had to end. When I came back to NY I was confident that with more than 7 years experience including international experience, I would have no trouble finding the perfect job. Of course, I failed to consider the economy. There was nothing out there and lots of talent to compete with. After many years of freelancing here and there (mostly at Financial Institutions), getting laid off twice in a two-year period, I started to get pretty discouraged and lost most of my confidence in my design ability. I also found that all the freelance jobs I was getting were in or related to major financial institutions. It was clear that I had become “type-casted” to the point that even I was convinced that financial design was the only kind of design I could do.
I am now working at yet another financial institution for more than 3 years. It is a stable job but a very dysfunctional environment with a difficult manager to work with. My problem now is I have lost the enthusiasm I used to have for design. I used to be so passionate about visual problem solving. Now I find myself saying I don’t like design anymore. This has made my work suffer and I no longer feel creative. I am beginning to see that it is time to move on to something else, but what? I have mostly worked in Print. I took a few classes in web design but never really enjoyed it so that isn’t an option. I’ve been trying to think of fields where I can still use some of the skills I’ve learned as a designer. Maybe become a headhunter for creative. Not sure what is involved with that but I don’t really consider myself a “people person,” which I think would be a big part of making connections. I am also considering Exhibit design since I enjoy using my hands and it always interested me how museums are laid out. This would probably require going back to school full time and not sure I will ever be able to make the kind of money I am making now. I would love to hear other people’s thoughts and experiences. I guess my main question is what to do next?

Hey all, I'm part of a group of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and UC Berkeley who are studying design processes. We are looking for some participants for an online study about design, and you'll be paid $10-20/hr in Amazon.com gift cards. Please see the link above to sign up. I can also answer questions here.
