Illustrator is great for logos, but I try to duck it for anything other than that. It seems to be slower and more crash prone than anything else in the suite.

I think the way AI is organized (in terms of layers and overall usage) makes it the best in the suite. :) (But I voted ages ago)
Euan, I'd definitely recommend InDesign if you plan on doing any brochures, books, etc. I did the school music program in it, and that worked great. I'm working on a typography book in it now. :) We even do our yearbook and newspaper in it at school. It's much easier to work with in terms of anything multi-page - single page projects don't need it as much, though i tend to do them in InDesign anyway. It makes PDFs and such a breeze as well.

Oh, also, InDesign has auto-recovery. I know Photoshop doesn't have it (that gave me hell on Thursday), and I can't recall if Ai does.
I'm pretty sure ai doesn't. It's a blessing in indesign, saved me many-a-time :)
