after effects is awesome once you learn it properly, which i wish i had. oh well, it's never too late i guess :)

Illustrator by far! However, I quite often use photoshop in unison with it. You can achieve some impressive results.

Just in relation to other packages, do not touch Corel Draw with a 10 foot pole, its evil!!! I use it at work and it is a pain in the a*se! Has a tendency to crash too! aarrggg

Good old ubuntu text editor and inkscape for vectors. Woo go open-source. I'm afraid I even use GIMP.

Deffinately. I just meant it as it's a shame GIMP doesn't have the power of photoshop or the other industry leaders but I guess you can't expect that when your getting it for free.
