Illustrator Fonts issue

I odn't know if I'm the only one getting this, but do you ever find when scrolling through the list, test fonts on a particular piece of text, that a font will be listed but will not work?
Therefre the text doesn't change, and the list skips to a particular font that does work?

Its so annoying! I have TradeGothic and it won't show the different weights... and I have some other fonts it simple refuses to use.

Does anyone have a clue how to solve this? Tried Google but can't seem to see anything :confused:

Oh it happens in CS3 and CS4 for me, on Win XP.

What do you use to manage your fonts?

Um nothing?
I just install them directly into C:\ ... \WINDOWS\Fonts\

I didn't realize PC's don't need a font management app. Sorry I can't help.

I've had the same issue on my Windows computers, unfortunately I've never found a freeware font repair tool. FontDoctor is supposed to work well.

This also happens to me. I have to find the font in the list and click it for it to change. I usually just type the first letters and click enter when the right font appears in the bar. But it doesn't change. This often happens to font's I've downloaded myself.

I wonder if it has issues with free fonts?... they seem to be the culprit...

Its probably more an issue with the font itself than Illy.... see if the font works in something stupid like notepad... if it doesnt its the font thats screwed... I used to have alot of problems with free fonts
