Default Quark or InDesign

Hey all, welcome to my first ever thread and hopefully not my last! I was wondering what people thought of Quark and InDesign more to the point which one they deemed the best!

Opinions please

Good question but I'm not sure if I can say which one is the best, the question is a little bit contradictory and many people have mentioned this before, that Quark is essentially a layout programme and In-Design is a design programme so if I was doing a piece that required any of the extended design elements of in-design I would use that. But for a publication layout Quark is far more the better option.
In all honesty I probably use Quark when I shouldn't out of habit because I've been using it that bit longer. But I can look at a piece and know straight off that In-Design is far the better option, so In-Design probably a bit better and much more of a design tool.

In a follow up to this I followed the tutorial on how to package an in-design file which is a corporate advertising folder and it converting the images text etc for use on a website, it's quite impressive when you get used it. The follow up is has anyone actually used the web stuff in Quark, I've had a brief dabble and I find it pretty pointless I also don't know anyone that uses it. Anyone know of someone that does/is??

It's a bit of mac vs PC question, but it seems to be that indesign is slowly strangling quark. I must admit I hated quark because it forces you to work in a much more regimented fashion, whereas In design gives you far more freedom to move. That said though, the publishing house where I work has had some repro-related problems that are almost certainly indirectly due to this aspect of indesign. It seems to be that, as there are more things that you as a user can do, there are simply more things to go wrong at the printer.

I've spoken to pre-indesign designers, and many of them prefer Quark. Whether that's due to familiarity or it being a better program is down to the individual. These days, I don't have a copy of quark so don't use it, but I don't feel any need to either... :-)

I think familiarity is the main reason.

Quark for me but then I haven't really tried InDesign. I like the simplicity of Quark.

I still can't understand why quark added web layouts to their software.

In direct competition to the web capabilities of ID, I would have thought, no? Unless I've misunderstood ye?
