I have no opinion as of yet, as I have only just received Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium yesterday, so although I am VERY familiar with photoshop, i haven't yet used illustrator, so i'll give you my opinion once I have.

It's a daft question they're both used for dfferent things how can one be better than the other, it's like saying whats better an egg or a TV remote??

Photoshop is great for photo's and images which is what it's meant for, Illustrator is great for vector Illustrations which is what it's meant for therefore each application is equally as good as the other.

Illustrator has always been and will always be the most logical for logo design. I don't ever recommend designing a logo straight up in Photoshop unless it's designed (DPI-wise) to fit the side of a building. Does anyone here really want to $#%^-off a client? Give them a logo in Photoshop that doesn't scale to the size they want. I think it hurts the client and makes you the designer look like an idiot. Educate the client as to why the Illustrator logo is better for them and allow them the use of a custom filter on their logo through Photoshop as an alternative.

Definitely Illustrator.

The worst thing about this is I know for a fact so many young designers out there start their logo designs in photoshop and it's such a bad way of learning.

Toon,....you're so right. I've had this happen when I hire a freelancer. I always spell out that Illustrator is required.
