So it seems there are several designers on here in the same price range.
Yeah, I usually want half of the total estimated cost upon completion & approval of the first page. And inevitabley there's usually some programming involved in that process.

And WOW.. FREE... yeah well... hmmmph

I appreciate that when your building your portfolio, but it would be better to create 'fake' work for that. As charging £0 for work, can cause a particular client to assume that's all our hard work is worth.

I agree that it is possible to do things for no charge, but if you want to go that route, find a well-known nonprofit and offer to do some work in exchange for credit or using your name as one of their sponsors.

It helps get your name out there, you'll look even better to have a probono in helping a nonprofit and because your name will be out there, you may get more work for the larger amount of exposure.

I do agree on creating fake work too. It keeps your design skills sharp and you do it whenever you have time and you're not really out any money or having to deal with a cheap client.

Exactly. Also if you have any family or friend who have a business, offer to do them a site for free as well as local schools, charity shops, cubs/scouts/beavers, kids football teams.

anything that has a totally different type of site will give you a new way of thinking as well as experience.

why not pull an advert out of a glossy magazine, scan it, slice it and see if you can recreate it as a web page in pure css & xhtml, just to see if you can do it.

i do this all the time...

FundRaisers.com: Giving- Your Guide To The World of Fundraising

I've been doing magazine covers as websites for years now. While Fundraisers.com has changed, you can see several of the covers in archives that I've designed.

It really is a unique look for a website. I"ll also upload some previous designs when I get a chance.
