Paid software can sometimes bring more features but that is no guarantee for success. You can just a good run a successfull forum with software you wrote yourself. It all comes to what your forum has to offer.

well the installation is easy say if you use a free forum software such as SMF, XMB or phpBB..
i can easily make themew and install extra modifications/hacks
