then maybe you should start charging more for your work and hitting the big money prospects not the small waste of time ones

You've lost me a bit there to be honest. You've not got enough money, yet you don't want to charge for your work? seems like a no-brainer to me.

We aren't talking huge fees just because we want to, but our work is as valid as anyone elses, and that's simply what we're trying to say.

I think the guy just posted in the wrong topic (forum) as Graphic Design Employment does kind of imply payment. If he posted in Graphic Design and Web Design Help and explained his situation maybe he would have had a better response.

I code and I could charge people for help but I don't. I don't use forums as a way to drum up business I use them to help others and be helped if I get stuck in my own work, i.e., when I need someone to help me with something in Photoshop as that is not my forte. For me helping people code helps me as I come across scenarios that I wouldn't otherwise and it keeps me sharp.

Does it mean I undervalue my expertise if I don't charge people? I don't think so.

Perhaps a new Forum Topic for free graphic design is required where people willing to help for free or people trying to hone their skills can practice on other people's projects; this would avoid any confusion and the absolutely unnecessary flaming that ensues.

Regards

Carl

↑↑↑ You should start your own forum and get all the people who work for free to join. That sounds like a better idea.

Hi Tommy,

I like your suggestion, so for giving me that piece of advice I am going to give you a piece of advice in return (see what I did there? We are trading so I'm not doing this for free); it is wise to back up ones claims with proof, it is unwise to claim something without first validating your claims.

Your website does not validate, it is not valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional; this is bad, not to mention that you have a link on your homepage stating that it is valid. You should be using ISO-8859-1 encoding because of your special characters and you have missed the xml declaration from the top of the document. You want to be wrapping your script tags in <!CDATA[[]]> tags as XHTML is a subset of XML. You use tables as part of your layout, THIS IS BAD. You have missed out the required attribute type in one of your script tags. You are using a transitional doctype which makes me think that you aren't good enough.

The list goes on and on and on.

So perhaps you are right, it may be a good thing that you don't do free work because if you doled out this tripe to people it would perpetuate bad design and lack of web standards to a new generation of programmers.

Kind Regards

Carl

lol.. yeah that's funny. And believe me.. it has been an ongoing issue with friggin Joomla that I have been working on forever now. The original code validates, but a couple plugins that I had enabled injects bad code.. and such is the risk with running open source CMS. Throughout the forum, you'd see my frustrations as I moved further into Joomla. Still not sold on it, but if I can get the kinks worked out.. it'd be OK. And there is always a place & time to use tables in design, if you use it correctly and understand why and when it is appropriate.. like when designing a forum or most any other data driven site, there may be a place for it.

As for my comment earlier.. I was just kinda busting your balls for offering the free work. I wouldn't advertise that fact.. that's all, cause people will wear you out on it. And as you become more and more active in here.. you'll see that most of us, myself included, spit out a BUNCH of free code for people.

My goal is for designers to learn why something works or why their original didn't... just giving the code isn't always the best answer if someone wants to learn. If someone just wants free code and isn't interested in learning, then I am less likely to give it to them. And on the same token, I am exceptionally appreciative when someone can explain a problem that I am having to me (like your suggestion for using ISO-8859-1 Western European)...

So there we have it.. glad to see you are so passionate about your work. I'll be looking forward to having you explain some of the problems I run into.
