Linked is always the best way then you just update one file and the whole site is updated
Is it better to link the css file, or is having it in the main source just as good?
Are there benefits to linking it? or visa versa?

Agreed... also, you need to address varying media types.

Multiple CSS files?
ahh yes. I recall that option floating around last night, and wondered. Silly me.
Thanks a lot to all!
Linked is also faster because browsers can open several simultaneous streams. Same goes for js. Same reason why bigger images should be sliced.
There's my 2 cents :)
so how exactly would one get a background image to be sliced into say four pieces, but still line up properly?
Just asses them as background to div containers with an index of 1 or so?
no need for the index, I just place them as the background images in my various elements. Its easy to line up the elements exactly with floats and consistent margins.
do you have a site that has this method and a css file available for it to see how it is done? Or a simple example? I think i am understanding, but not 100% sure.
basically i can get away with just using float left/right and adding specific margins to all divs for their alignment?
I don't mean to sound ignorant, but my recent web class obviously wasn't very helpful. Considering i basically taught myself.
