Creating a CSS layout from scratch may be one of the better places to start and did help me understand the process of setting up a ccs style capable of containing a decent amount of content. To learn further I downloaded some css templates, like the ones here, to look into them and see how the code worked by pulling it apart and changing it to better understand the elements and what they do in that template. The multiple templates was a means to an end, in that learning css was to enable me to redesign my own website, so the better I understood all the different ways (within reason to my needs) of manipulating a layout the better I could put together my own layout the way I wanted. There are of course the more static tutorials you'll want to look at that are available quite readily with a google search like cssbeginner and Comprehensive CSS Guide which can provide a reference as well as being able to help you learn from scratch.
