This site is dping really doing well !! Thanks to Toon and his expert knowlede in search engine optimization... and maybe a little to those in here who link relevant content to this site.
Which makes me think.... How do you promote your design works? What works for you on getting your name and your services out to the public? What turns up when you google your website? I can safely say that a little less than 25% of my site traffic came from this forum in the past 7 days.. hurray GDF. Thanks I think it is also safe to say that I probably won't do busniess with any of you in the next 7 days (none that makes money anway.. .. ha-ha).. but that brings me to my next question... How valuable are indirect hits to your business? Or are they at all? I think it is important for everyone to note that as Toon does such a wonderful job on getting this site to hit the search engines.. almost everything in this forum turns up next to your name when you Google your site name... Very Orwellian... anyhow.. just curious as usual

You've almost answered your question in reverse, it's not 'what turns up when you google your website?' it's what engine searches are being used that your website show up in.
50% of hits here are from mispelled search terms, ie, 4th in google for Tomarto! If I was running a fruit and veg forum for under 12's I'd be on a winner with that keyword and should maybe misspell a few others. A great tip that is well known for forums is don't always use 'forum' but try and include 'forums' because so many people search and put the 's' at the end. It works the same for web design, make sure you have a web designs somewhere the more variety the higher the chance. One search term that works well is all the logosauce promoting I did, people looking for that whether it be 'logo sauce' or 'logosauce' will always come across this because of the mutal linking between the two sites. No this works to perfection, because the kind of people that sign up there are the kind of people that sign up here. So it works. No good me getting hits from say a hairdressing website. Relevant linking is the key, google tell you want they want.

i can be wrong now but i think that the search engine that google (probably all search engines) is built on markov chains and like toon said..you can do smart things so that your website get more hits and so on
it's actually kinda interesting how the search engine is built..at least i think so =) |

i've done some mathematical calculations at school on how you get your site ranked high (if it's the first hit or second and so on) and well..if i remember it correct it was more or less how good links you had on your page and how many pages that had links to your page..from that google (at least used to) calculate a markov chain and calculate how much "time" spend on every page using probability and such..something like that at least =)
it was of course more than that but that (as i remembered it) was the main idea the cool thing about google is that they have huge computers that calculate all these stuff all the time perhaps this wasn't the gold you were looking for and perhaps im off topic now =) |

That's pretty much it, with about 100 other factors thrown in for luck. Yahoo run still alot on keyword density but google cut this out a while back, what they've replaced it with I'm not too sure.
SE's are looking for quality relevant links in, good descriptive content that is updated regularly that's the main 3 points.
