Hidding any text on your index or splash page will get you booted out of google eventually. It may work for a little while, But eventually google will catch you, and bump you out.

I have first hand experience with this: As the company I currently work for (d.o. being my LLC on the side) builds flash based web sites, and we were using this method to optimize our sites. Then one day, BAM! google started knocking our clients out of the search because of the hidden text. Had to revamp our entire SEO strategy.
