That is exactly the problem, critique from other designers is very different from the comments you get from interacting with clients. And that's what you're getting cheated out of with contests.

Much of the time the client doesn't even know what they want or what a business identity is. ...Does it position the company against competition? ....Does it fit product or web site color scheme? .....Will it go on a company van? ....Do stakeholders have differing ideas about the image they want to project?

Nowadays, other than supplying an alphanumeric string, the client is irrelevant. It could just as well fit a catering, beauty, real estate, pet walking, personal shopping or other business. ...you want to grow up? Then the critique is simple: Get real clients that talk to you, disagree with you and can be persuaded by you.
