WordPress is a great application for blogging and in some cases your entire web presentation. It offers content management for those who want several contributors to build sites. There are also many plug-ins enhancing the application.
The WordPress application can be some work to maintain, especially if you have customized, or added several plug-ins. If your hosting site offers "Fantastico" in the Cpanel you have less work to do for install and updates.
You can always run the application on WordPress.com for free. It has restrictions for commercial use but means lower maintenance. There are lots of themes available for free, just be careful to test the one you use. If you find it on another up and running blog you are usually in good shape.
