Exactly - picture the scenario - you come in late at night in the dark absolutely pished out of your head. You try to creep up the stairs in the dark so that your partner/parents doesn't know:
a) how drunk you are
b) what time it is
Your foot gets caught under one of the "stair" platforms and you go to gab ahold of the non-existent bannister, go careering off the side and end up in casualty with a broken arm or leg...
